India on Wheels

India on Wheels is one of the best food trucks in Pittsburgh.  Its located in Oakland one block up from the Cathedral of Learning on Bigelow Blvd.  Going to Pitt I have had many good experiences with Rita from India on Wheels and this time was no different.  Over the years at Pitt I had to convince many people why they should try some of the delectable food that comes from some of these trucks.  This time though it was only myself who was going to enjoy a meal.  Rita has many different things to choose from so today I decided to go with something I had never had.  The Mango Chicken Curry.  Now I am not against spicing up food, but be warned if you tell Rita you want it spicy you will be in for a painful surprise.  After ordering it took no longer than two or three minutes from my Mango Chicken Curry and my Mango Lassi.  Getting both of these items from $6.00 is one of the best bargains in Pittsburgh.  The only downside of India on Wheels is there are no tables close by from which you can enjoy your meal. I would recommend India on Wheels to anyone what is looking for a quick bite to eat when in Pittsburgh.  Also as an added bonus you can call at 412-378-6611 and tell her your order and she will have it ready for you when you get there.  This does work well when your trying to avoid the lines at lunch.

India on Wheels

Got to head down to Pittsburgh, Oakland specifically, going to grab a bite to eat at India on Wheels food truck.  I have eaten here before and it is on of the best food trucks around.  And if you do get the lamb curry you better like it spicy.  Ill give you a run down of what is very good there, and you can't beat the price.

Angelo's Washington PA.

Going to Angelo's was a welcome surprise, but not without its share of shortcomings.  I would of never thought of going to this out of the way restaurant except the first time I decided to stop they told me it would be a little more than an hour wait.  So my girlfriend and I just decided to head somewhere else.  I figured I would never go back or at least not for a while, but having a girlfriend that does love her pasta I think I never had a choice in the matter.  The second time I attempted to go back to Angelo's I was once again turned away with a hour plus wait time.  You would think after my first failed attempt I would of thought of making a reservation, but as you will come to realize I don't think ahead too often.  Well rather than face the scorn of my lovely little blonde girlfriend who has the tenacity of a pit bull I made reservations for my third attempt.  Maybe going in to it I didn't expect much, but I also wanted to go in with an open mind.
When we first went in the first thing I noticed is the gelato/desert kitchen which is right next to the hostess stand.  The smells coming from this kitchen caused me to almost want to start dinner with one of the flavors of gelato before anything else.  I ended up holding off these urges, but just barely.  Our waiter was attentive throughout the meal without being over bearing.  To start the meal I had a bowl of the minestrone soup.  The soup was nothing special to be honest.  I love my soup and this soup didn't measure up in my book.  It tasted as if it was made a little too early in the day and didn't have great flavor.  This soup was just unremarkable and I wished it was a little better.  She started off with a house salad which was a good salad over all.  All the ingredients were fresh and crisp so the salad was a better choice than the soup.
For the main course I went with the Pasta Primavera on the recommendation of our waiter.  Being a "fat guy" that hasn't come across a meal I didn't like.  Between looking at what people at the other tables are eating and blindly picking off the menu I can usually find something I will enjoy.  The pasta primavera was an average rendition of the meal.  Like the vegetables from the salad they were cooked perfectly along with the pasta which was done well.  The worst thing about the pasta primavera was that it didn't look great on the plate.  I wasn't going to Angelo's expecting something plated as it would be in a fine dining restaurant, so i feel it wouldn't be fair to knock Angelo's for this.  My girlfriend decided to go with the basic Ravioli which she split between the cheese and the meat ravioli.  The ravioli's were done well not overly doughy, they had a good mix between dough and filling.  Both types were better than average with the cheese ravioli's being slightly better than the meat ravioli.
Now for the final part of the meal, and the one that I had been waiting for since we walked in through the door and smelled the desserts.  I went with the Pistachio gelato and Chelsea went with Stracciatella which is an Italian Chocolate Chip gelato.  Let me say that neither disappointed.  They were both the high lights of the meal.  Both were very flavorful and excellent in every way.  I think that this would be something I would come back here to eat for this reason.  After my experience at Angelo's there are a few things I would change about what I ate, but the saving grace of this restaurant is their desserts and more specifically their gelato.  I would even think about stopping in just to get dessert here if i am in the area again.  All and all Angelo's is an average restaurant with well above gelato.

The Start of the Journey

Being my first attempt at blogging I wanted to blog about something that I think can never be written off as frivolous or unnecessary.  Those two things are food and travel.  These two things are what really drive me.  It can bet finding the next place to see and experience or getting the next great meal.  These two things can be from flying half way around the world to be in Vietnam and have a great bowl of Pho.  It can also be as simple as finding a hole in the wall restaurant in rural Appalachia that makes one great meal.  Everything and anything in between is what is important.  It’s the people, the food, and the places that truly make up life and this is why it is important to showcase these people, places, and meals.
